Shades of Swagger #33 | Portrait by Elizabeth L. Gilbert. When feather meet welding googles, the results are unexpected.
The Circumcisionist, Malawi, 2006, silver gelatin photographic print,  Elizabeth Gilbert.
Elizabeth L. Gilbert has been working as a photographer based in Nairobi, Kenya, for many years. First she worked as a war photographer, but since 1998 has been documenting the rapidly changing customs and rituals of the Maasai, Samburu, Mursi, Karo, Hamar, and the Batwa peoples of the Great Rift Valley. She not only has documented ancient traditions before they completely disappear, she has brought the photographs back to the people, so that they can see and react to their own images.
